DIVE SITES FROM
THE DIVE LOG OF THE "former" SUNRISE DIVING ADVENTURES
HOME |
AMMO DROP | SEA SHELL CITY
| BLACK CORAL | WET CAVE
OK, divers, this is not the familiar by-the-numbers listing posted by other dive
companies. We'll give you a little peek at a few of the quality sites we previously conducted guided tours for
our fun-loving and discriminating dive buddies. Please remember these dive sites are seasonal and condition dependent on: weather, surf, tides, wind, rain, ocean conditions and the time of year you chose to visit.
| SITE #10: |
AMMO DROP |
| Skill level: |
Intermediate to Advanced |
| Depth range: |
40 to 100+ feet |
| Location: |
East side |
An old WWII munitions ship ran aground near here, jettisoning her cargo
of hundreds of unopened boxes of live ordnance. This dive is a military man's dream. The
ammo boxes sprout coral heads outside with octopuses inside. Bandoliers, compete with
cartridges, are strewn about the ocean floor. Mortar and howitzer rounds, 30- and
50-caliber rounds and hand grenades are found in naturally concreted blocks. Tritons and
helmet conches crawl among the rubble.
| SITE #11: |
SEA SHELL CITY (say it faster!) |
| Skill level: |
Novice to Intermediate |
| Depth range: |
50 to 80 feet |
| Location: |
South side |
Near an abandoned harbor, follow a lava flow seaward, crossing an
expansive sand flat. Isolated large coral heads act like magnets to attract resident
octopuses, moray eels, leaf scorpion fish, frogfish and turkeyfish. The sand flat reveals
hundreds of empty (and not-so-empty) seashells, some with baby octopuses inside. Blennies,
razorfish and burrowing urchins dwell in the sandy bottom.
| SITE #9: |
BLACK CORAL |
| Skill level: |
Advanced |
| Depth range: |
60 to 140 feet |
| Location: |
East side |
Usually a scooter or kayak dive, due to distance from shore. A 50-foot
flat drops first down a wall to 90 feet, then continues deeper past sea fans and fat
jacks. Slipper lobsters and squirrelfishes inhabit pukas (holes) along the current-fed
drop off. Whales and eagle rays have been seen here; a resident white tip shark may cruise
past branches of black coral.
| SITE #2: |
WET CAVE |
| Skill level: |
Cave Diver |
| Depth range: |
40 feet |
| Location: |
North side |
Three underwater lava tubes lead back into the heart of a mountain. A
large 30-foot opening signals the beginning of a tube that continues for more than a
hundred yards, eventually tapering to an impassable major restriction. Cold fresh water
keeps you alert to the scarce and minute life forms here. The silty bottom will suck up
dropped objects such as a dive light (we know one that's still there).
